BBG Watch Commentary
Voice of America (VOA) videos showing nothing but burning of Jewish and American flags and other protests in the Muslim world against President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem are getting record numbers of views on Facebook, with one VOA video from various anti-American and anti-Jewish demonstrations showing already over one million views.
Viewership for these one-sided Voice of America videos is surpassing multiple times the number of views for other VOA news reports on Facebook which are embarrassingly low for such an expensive U.S. government-run media outlet funded by American taxpayers.
High viewership for such one-sided attacks on the United States and Jews, as presented in these VOA videos, raises serious questions about the current management of the Voice of America within the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) federal agency and their mission.
High popularity of anti-American and anti-Israeli VOA videos in contrast to other VOA news reports suggests that VOA’s impact is other than what U.S. taxpayers and Congress expect it to be. VOA may be causing harm to Jews and all Americans, not only abroad but also among ethnic communities in the United States which watch VOA content online.
How does one explain the high popularity of VOA videos showing the burning of American and Israeli flags, a visual representation of death to America and death to Israel? Such biased Voice of America news videos are a violation of the VOA Charter (U.S. Public Law 94-350) which says that VOA news must be “accurate, objective, and comprehensive.”
The question everybody should ask is whether U.S. taxpayers’ dollars given to VOA ($224 million in FY 2017 as part of BBG’s $740 million budget) are being used to promote hatred toward the United States and Israel through VOA propaganda. Such VOA videos can easily help to radicalize potential terrorists with vivid propaganda images of anti-American and anti-Jewish protests and slogans.
