BBG Watch Commentary
At the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) open meeting last week, BBG Chairman Jeff Shell praised Radio Free Asia (RFA) for its innovative satellite television streaming of Twitter feeds which are banned by the Chinese government. Shell also complemented RFA on its programming after he and other BBG Governors concluded their RFA board meeting.
In adition to streaming Twitter, RFA has also streamed live TV video feeds from pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong. Some of RFA’s audio, video, and Twitter streaming on a BBG-leased satellite TV channel replaced numerous repeats of VOA Chinese television program which VOA management failed to update with live news. VOA management also failed to expand live television programming to China in response to the protests in Hong Kong.
