BBG Watch Commentary
Radio World reported on the Committee for U.S. International Broadcasting’s (CUSIB – cusib.org) support for the extension of Kevin Klose’s appointment to lead Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
The article quotes former Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) member Ambassador Victor Ashe who now sits on CUSIB’s Advisory Board as saying that “Kevin Klose saved Radio Liberty in Russia from self-destruction.” Ashe served as vice chair of the RFE/RL corporate board.
The article also quotes CUSIB director Ted Lipien as saying that Klose’s appointment “will be greatly appreciated by many courageous journalists.”
Klose has rehired some of the Radio Liberty Russian journalists fired by the previous RFE/RL management team and initiated other major reforms. He still faces many problems resulting from years of mismanagement and neglect. RFE/RL employees hope that Klose will find solutions to these problems and will revitalize the U.S. taxpayer-supported media outlet serving audiences in nations without free media.
