Vice President Joe Biden Rooting for US World Cup Team Playing in Brazil. Voice of America English News had no reports about Biden’s presence at the USA v Ghana match, his visit with the winning U.S. team or his current trip to Latin America.

Voice of America English News can’t find America’s top fan at the World Cup in Brazil — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. VOA English News found one American fan who is rooting for Spain. Voice of America English News had no reports about Biden’s presence at the USA v Ghana match, his visit with the winning U.S. team or his current trip to Latin America.

The visit of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to Brazil is not mentioned in any reports on the main VOA English News website. VOA English News also did not report online on the main VOA news site that the Vice President watched the USA vs Ghana World Cup match.

VOA English News also did not report that the Vice President visited the locker room of the U.S. team. In fact, Voice of America English News has absolutely nothing — zero (except for one photo retweet in Spanish) — on Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Latin America.

In addition to Brazil, Biden will visit Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.

A recent VOA video report from the inauguration of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko had failed to mention that the event was attended by Vice President Joe Biden and a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation, which included Sens. John McCain, Chris Murphy and Ron Johnson and Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

In recent years and months, the Voice of America has often failed to report on key U.S. news, was late in reporting them or offered only superficial coverage. Critics blame it not on individual journalists, but on mismanagement by senior VOA officials.

While the Voice of America did not send a correspondent with Vice President Biden to cover his visit to Ukraine, it sent VOA Director David Ensor on a trip to Poland and Ukraine at the same time.

A Voice of English News report with video from Brazil, “Copacabana Beach Draws World Cup Fans From Near, Far – VOA,” makes no mention of Vice President Biden. VOA found only one America fan who was “rooting for Spain.” The Voice of America could not find America’s top fan at the World Cup in Brazil — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

There is a tweet on the separate VOA World Cup Blog of a photo of Vice President Biden seated with President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, but one would have to leave the main VOA news site to see it. The VOA blog does not offer any explanation or any further reporting about Biden at the World Cup. The VOA World Cup Blog is very difficult to navigate, to use, or to quickly find any useful information.

Biden is not mentioned in any VOA English News World Cup reports from Brazil on the primary VOA news website. Other than one photo, even the Voice of America World Cup Blog does not say anything about Biden’s visit to Brazil and his presence during the USA vs Ghana match, which the U.S. won, or his meeting with the U.S. team.

A report on the main VOA English news website about the U.S. win over Ghana is not from the Voice of America but from Reuters. Reuters does not mention Vice President Biden watching the game.

So much for the Voice of America presenting America to the world according to the VOA Charter. But according to a recent comment by Voice of America director David Ensor, VOA will not be a mouthpiece for the White House or anybody else. It seems to us, however, that Vice President Biden is representing the United States at the World Cup, not just himself or the White House.

But may be we are wrong and VOA Director is right. Under VOA Director David Ensor and VOA Executive Editor Steve Redisch, Voice of America posted dozens of news reports on the British royal wedding in 2011 and the British royal baby christening in 2013. Obviously, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visiting with the winning U.S. soccer team at the World Cup in Brazil does not meet the Voice of America’s high journalistic standards for news importance, news relevance, and adherence to the VOA Charter that Mr. Redisch and Mr. Ensor had established earlier with extensive Voice of America news coverage of the British royal family. Why bother.

VOA CHARTER

To protect the integrity of VOA programming and define the organization’s mission, the VOA Charter was drafted in 1960 and later signed into law on July 12, 1976, by President Gerald Ford. It reads:

The long-range interests of the United States are served by communicating directly with the peoples of the world by radio. To be effective, the Voice of America must win the attention and respect of listeners. These principles will therefore govern Voice of America (VOA) broadcasts:

  1. VOA will serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news. VOA news will be accurate, objective, and comprehensive.
  2. VOA will represent America, not any single segment of American society, and will therefore present a balanced and comprehensive projection of significant American thought and institutions.
  3. VOA will present the policies of the United States clearly and effectively, and will also present responsible discussions and opinion on these policies. (Public Law 94-350)

U.S. taxpayers paid for these programs by the Voice of America (VOA) while many human rights-related news stories and important U.S. foreign policy pronouncements by the White House, the State Department, and members of Congress went unreported on VOA websites in recent months and years.

Years and months later, these reports on the British royalty posted on the VOA English website show zero or very few Facebook “Likes” or any other indication of any notable audience engagement through social media.
