“My release became possible because of mass media, including those which you represent. Thank you very much”

“I think that the attention of mass media helps very many people who remain unjustly our in Russian prisons preserve their lives, health, and hope for freedom.”– Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Berlin, Germany, December 22, 2013

One of the most active and effective international mass media outlets focusing on the plight of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and human rights issues in Russia has been Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), which is funded by U.S. taxpayers and overseen by the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).

RFE/RL reported that at his first news conference after his release from prison, former Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has said he will try to help secure the release of other Russian political prisoners.

“One should not see me as a symbol that there are no political prisoners left in Russia,” Khodorkovsky told journalists at a December 22 press conference near Checkpoint Charlie, the former Cold War symbol that marked the crossing from East to West Berlin, RFE/RL reports.
