Broadcasting Board of Governors Director of Communications and External Affairs, Lynne Weil, will leave the BBG to become Public Affairs Director at the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition.
The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition news release said that “Weil will lead the growing advocacy organization’s efforts to educate the public on the importance of America’s engagement in the world and the effectiveness of U.S. international affairs programs.”
The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (www.usglc.org) is described as “a broad-based influential network of 400 businesses and NGOs; national security and foreign policy experts; and business, faith-based, academic and community leaders in all 50 states who support a smart power approach of elevating development and diplomacy alongside defense in order to build a better, safer world.”
As Director of Communications and External Affairs for the Broadcasting Board of Governors, Lynne Weil had one of the most difficult public relations jobs in the U.S. federal government due to the agency’s many management problems. Journalists who have worked with Weil praised her to BBG Watch for her quick, comprehensive and honest responses to their questions. She was also praised by NGO representatives for facilitating their interactions with BBG Board members.

In this role, Weil will lead the growing advocacy organization’s efforts to educate the public on the importance of America’s engagement in the world and the effectiveness of U.S. international affairs programs.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lynne to our senior management ranks,” said USGLC President & CEO Liz Schrayer. “She will lead a dynamic new department combining our teams for communications outreach and programs. No one is more capable to take on this exciting new vision and task.”
Weil will serve as the principal in furthering the USGLC’s digital and traditional communications strategy, strengthening relationships with journalists who cover foreign policy and politics, and overseeing the staging of national and state-based events. She and her team will amplify the voices of business, military, faith, and political leaders brought together by the USGLC to strengthen U.S. investments in global development and diplomacy.
“It has long been a passion of mine to help Americans understand U.S. foreign policy and national security,” Weil said. “Advocating for a strategic investment in development and diplomacy will come naturally, given where I’ve been. It is an honor to join the USGLC to help advance this critical mission.”
Weil currently is Director of Communications and External Affairs for the Broadcasting Board of Governors. She joined the BBG in 2012 after spending two years with the U.S. State Department, first as Press Director and Spokeswoman for the U.S. Agency for International Development, then as a Senior Advisor for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Previously, she served the U.S. Congress as a legislative fellow, as Press Secretary for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during and after 9/11, and as Communications Director for the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Before entering public service, Weil was a contributing journalist for domestic and international media, including National Public Radio, The New York Times, and the BBC. She spent nearly nine years as a foreign correspondent before earning a Master’s in Public Policy at Princeton University. Her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies is from UCLA.
She will start with the USGLC in mid-November.
